Zoology student wins national award for monkey picture

A photograph capturing a tender moment between a family of Barbary Macaque monkeys, taken by a Salford student has won a National award.
Rachael Fraser, 29, won ‘most outstanding photograph’ at the Jane Goodall Roots and Shoots Awards, which took place in London last week.
The second year zoology student took the photograph on a chance visit to Trentham Monkey Forrest in Stoke-on-Trent recently.
She said: “I was very surprised to win best photograph. When they called out my name to say I’d won I just sat there in shock, and I have had a smile on my face ever since. I’m really proud of myself, and to meet Jane Goodall at the awards ceremony was also very inspiring”.
Rachael, from Liverpool, helped set up and run the Salford University Environment and Conservation volunteering society. She was one of five students who represented the University of Salford at the awards ceremony.
Accompanying her was wildlife student and Roots and Shoots ambassador Tash Woest, who recently saved an animal sanctuary in Zimbabwe from closing down.
Tash said: “We had the chance to meet Jane Goodall at the awards. She was humble, gentle and displayed great interest in our work. There was a sense of pride form her and we were just so happy to share her lifelong dream by making it happen: To inspire the younger generation and get them actively involved in helping people, the environment and animals”.
Lori Moore, head of the Wildlife Society at Salford also attended the ceremony, alongside fellow wildlife students Ella Trickett and Sevim Yildiz.
Dr Chiara Benvenuto, lecturer in zoology at the University of Salford said: “I’m very proud that the students have been recognised for the amazing work they are all doing for wildlife outside of their studies.
“They are all very competent students, and their passion and competence for the subject sets a good example to the others on the course. The students all make the most of volunteering and placement opportunities that the University offers, and as such they are all shining examples of what can be achieved as a student at the University of Salford”.
