Built Environment KTP student scoops national accolade

A Salford student, Marina Machado, has been selected out of more than 600 nominees as the winner of the UK Student Employee of the Year Awards. Marina will be recognised for her work as a part of a Salford Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme at a glittering ceremony in Liverpool on 2 July 2015.
The KTP initiative was installed forty years ago to create opportunities for Salford students to support hundreds of companies from a wide range of sectors to improve competitiveness, productivity and performance.
As a Salford KTP associate, Marina is currently working on a two and a half year project with a young local company Links Project Management who supply fittings and furnishings for the student accommodation market.
Through this project, she is enabling the company to ensure Building Information Modelling (BIM) becomes an integral part of their production from design through to refurbishment and thereby becomes BIM Level 2 compliant by 2016 as required in the latest UK Government Construction Strategy.
Marina is supported by Professor Jason Underwood and Andrew Fleming from the School of the Built Environment, who are supervising her throughout the project as academic lead and supervisor for the project, respectively.
Professor Underwood said: “Marina has worked to a level far above and beyond that which is normally expected.
“By increasing the knowledge and understanding of Links staff towards BIM and business improvement, Marina has helped foster improvements in employee morale and helped the company define its future direction with clear targets.”
Ian Roberts, Director and the KTP industry supervisor at Links added: “Without the work Marina is developing with KTP and the BIM Project our organisation could have potentially spent tens of thousands of pounds on software that was not in line with the strategy and our business requirements. “
Marina is a MSc BIM & Integrated Design student at the University.
